Globalization is an economic and partially a social arrangement where the world is interconnected for the mutual benefit. This is a kind of social arrangement where there are mutually occurring sets of understanding. In this discussion, the analysis focuses on the history and the effects of globalization in Mexico City, the city that has been in existence for decades, with several positive and negative effects of modernization as well as globalization influencing it. Globalization brings people together from different aspects of life and gives them something common to celebrate. In this case, Mexico City has been connected to the rest of the globe by the businesses and cultural outcomes. Mexico City is one of the places with the most noticeable effects of globalization on the American continent. Globalization is the primary driving force for the growth and diversity of activities in Mexico City, creating opportunities for business but also negative social influence.
Mexico City as the capital of Mexico is marked with different business ventures that have emerged as the result of globalization. This city is well known for its hospitality business, which is its strength, but it is also feared by many for the violence emanating from drug menace in the country. The globalization of Mexico City started in the mid-1980s when the government embarked on the process of loosening the trade restrictions with the rest of the world. Tariffs were removed, and incentives were given to people who traded with the North American states. This process led to the joining of NAFTA, the trade association bringing the countries of North America together. At the beginning, the major partners of the partnership were Canada and the USA, the nations that have contributed the most towards the globalization of Mexico City.
The income levels for the employed people as compared to those who had business of their own substantially changed in the 1990s when business was opened and expanded across borders. However, in some places within the city, globalization has not been experienced at all. Mexico City is unique since it is highly populated and it harbors people of different calibers. Even if the outside business was made easier by the removal of some tariffs, the internal methods of doing business remained complicated by the government policies and conflicting laws regarding trade, which created a significant diversity among the cities surrounding towns. People who do farming have a rough time trying to sell their produce in the local market instead of taking them to the other members of the trade association. However, the importation of goods into the city has become easier, thus yielding positive economic impact on the people and the state. Unfortunately, globalization came with negative and unintended implications.
According to Christian Parenti, the journey towards globalization and modernization of Mexico has been a rough and painful one, since people had to die for there to progress. Gun business and drug peddling have been a painful reality in the country, especially in the capital where every business has its foundation. Youths in the city engage in crimes in their quest to survive, since foreigners have taken over most business opportunities. It should be noted that this is one of the issues that the Zapatistas have fought for years, trying to set standards as far as modernization is concerned. Mexico City has contributed significantly to the growth of hospitality businesses in the American continent since the stakeholders have been able to integrate foreign concepts into the traditions, making a unique mix of different societies.
For a long time, Mexico has been long known to be one of the major drug dealing nations across the globe. The high concentration of drug dealers in Mexico City appeared because of the free trade across borders and the reduction of regulations. As the consequence of the global connection, the northern states of the American continent have become wealthier than those located in the south, including Mexico City to some extent. This city is an excellent example of diversity since it has a population consisting of poor people, middle working class, and the wealthy who own companies and big institutions. On the other hand, globalization has also brought the adverse effects related to crime and drug gangs. Globalization has created a city admired by many people for its openness and hospitality, but it has also created a place where poverty and crime persist. Christian Parenti emphasizes on the need for mutual agreement on the extent, to which globalization should affect people since some negative influences are not avoidable, and they can be detrimental to society.
By the year 2014, it was believed that 15,000 street children lived in the city and slept in the cold. These are children born in the street while others are from homes, where parents can no longer take care of their children, or who have been jailed because of drugs or killed by gangs. Surprisingly, most people doing business in this city are not Mexican natives. Globalization has created rich farmers who thrive in Mexico City, selling their farm produce and establishing companies. For instance, corn business as well as the trade of other cereals produced within the country is carried out on a large scale within the city. However, these activities have also brought about a resistant group of people who fight against the establishment of urban structures within their farmlands as globalization brings more and more money. For instance, the Zapatistas are people who feel isolated and negatively by the modernization.
The Zapatistas group works hard to stop globalization and it has been in conflict with the authorities for decades. These people try their best to retain their traditions, preventing foreign influence from getting into their way of thinking. Many times, the Zapatistas have made Mexico City and the country in general appear in the world news in relation to globalization. The majority of people who depend on farming have been disappointed with the way business is handled in the city since most of their produce goes outside the country with little income coming down to them. Currently, the government works to bring some understanding to the people who have opposed the free trade policies of the countries from the north. For years now, Mexico City has been in the global headlines for its thriving hospitality businesses that gather entrepreneurs and visitors from all over the world to invest, spend time, and holidays.
Globalization has made Mexico City a comprehensive urban center where one can find an African, Indian, or Asian treat without having to visit an Asian restaurant or an African resort. The hospitality industry in the city has become more integrated with the major global interests, producing and offering world-class services to people who visit Mexico City. The local population enjoys this major benefit of the openness of the business system. Initially, the city was not attractive, and people used to fear to travel towards that direction due to crime and drug-related tension. However, these days, the government has put measures to ensure that visitors are not caught up in the local issues. Climate and globalization are the principle determinants of openness in the city with agriculture contributing significantly towards the international business.
In conclusion, the city is closely integrated with the rest of the world by the expansive range of business opportunities. Globalization is the primary driving force for the growth and diversity of activities in Mexico City, creating opportunities for business as well as negative social influence. Most people visit Mexico City as a holiday destination, since there are world-class hotels and hospitality services, attracting serious foreign attention. However, it is also known to be a risky place when drug related issues arise since there is still the menace of youth gangs and crime. Globalization has been welcomed and opposed with equal measures, with some people feeling as if the city has been given to the foreigners for free. On the other hand, local business people benefit from the free trade that exists between the country and its neighbors, which makes the city favorable for the international business.
