At a young age, my teachers, parents, and friends discovered my passion for science. I spent most of my school time concentrating on scientific issues and studying scientific-related matters. When I was in fourth grade, I spent hours studying science on my computer to the extent of reading things that were above my educational qualification. It was not received well by my father. He had an idea that I should study things relevant to my school work and avoid things meant for high school and university students. It built a negative relationship between us since he kept warning me to stop it and I kept forgetting or ignoring it.
One Saturday morning, we were heading to the rural areas to visit our grandmother. Dad was driving while mum was sitting next to him. At the back seat were me and my younger sister. It started raining, a factor that resulted in the occurrence of a rainbow. My sister and I began to argue about the phenomenon. Lucky enough, I had earlier researched the topic and started to teach my sister the science behind the formation of the rainbow. The discussion distracted my father who looked back and started yelling at me reminding me to stop thinking of things that cannot be of help to me at that age. The distraction made him forget that he was driving that led to an accident. Immediately after it, my little sister looked at me and told me to see the results of my science. My two parents got badly injured and spent a long period in the hospital.
My love for science is still valid. However, every time I read something related to the environment, vehicles or weather, I recall all the things that happened on that day and regret my discussion in the presence of my dad. After the event, it took me a long period of recovery from the shock and a lifetime feeling that it was me who caused the accident. Today, I am a young adult who always avoids discussing science-related matters in front of my parents as a strategy of preventing the reoccurrence of bad memories.
